Crispy Crunchy Juicy Goodness

I love Japanese produce. So fresh. So organic. So yummy! There is something to be said for locally grown fruits and vegetables. I appreciate knowing my produce wasn't picked before it was ripe and sprayed with some chemical to make it LOOK ripe. Right now apples, kabocha squash (Japanese pumpkin), Mikan oranges, persimmons, figs and Naruto sweet potatoes are all in season. I love autumn! Every time I go to the checkout counter, my shopping cart is so colorful! Now I know why the Japanese live so long.

Edamame plants - next door to our apartment

Isn't your mouth watering?!?!

I wasn't crazy about sweet potatoes.....until I tried these.

And the variety of MUSHROOMS!

One of my favorite things about living in Colorado is that I have easy access to a TON of farmer's markets and locally grown produce. I totally agree with you that it's nice to know that our fruits and vegetables are actually ripe and healthy, rather than sprayed and waxed to look like they're ready to eat.

We have the same advantages in Hawaii. We have 5 or 6 farmers' markets just on Oahu...one is within a mile of the house! Every Sunday morning we are off to the farmers' market to pick up our vegetables, bread, and local favorites (ono haupia...Emma's favorite)
We don't experience seasons...so pretty much year round we have incredible selections.
Unfortunately the large grocery chains still outsource their produce...mainly from South America.
When I first arrived in Hawaii, I bought most of my produce at the commissary...and within a couple of days everything was rotten.
We have a small container garden, which renders vegetables and herbs from time to time...but we haven't quite reached sustainability.
Which brings me to my next point....sustainable agriculture. I know the United States is wrapped up in sustainable energy...well...they need to look beyond that.

oh my goodness yes!!! I love Asia - Aileena and I are never lacking for all the locally grown/organic food we can down. We have a farmer's Market every friday, literally outside the door of where we teach, and then the grocery stores are very conscious of the Organic Food Movement - so they always provide that option.

I love your produce! That is so wonderful and mouth watering. Rick's complaining because we don't have enough produce tonight. Even though we had two apples (each), an orange, kimchi, a green salad, sesame leaves (served with rice korean style), and a head of broccoli-not to metion the tomato sauce that was on the garbanzo beans we had for breakfast. Its never enough, we love it!
